Refurbishment of the BYP Centre has transformed a much-loved historic building in Biggar, South Lanarkshire into a welcoming, flexible, and inspiring space for local young people.
Situated within a conservation area, the project required a sensitive yet imaginative approach to breathe new life into this important community landmark.
Sustainability was central to the refurbishment. Decarbonisation was a key objective for the Biggar Youth Project board, and the upgraded centre now sets a strong example of energy-efficient design. The building features roof-mounted solar panels that generate on-site electricity, an air-source heat pump providing heating and hot water, and a heat-recovery ventilation system that ensures year-round comfort while maximising efficiency. Modern technology is now working alongside sympathetically upgraded building fabric, this approach has generated several retrofit award nominations for the project.
The result is a vibrant community hub that honours its history while delivering a forward-looking, sustainable space for the young people of Biggar.
